OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Foundation are to support high quality research in New Zealand into studies that address problems with mental health by providing funding for studies into their epidemiology, aetiology, pathology, clinical presentation, intervention and prevention or towards any one or more related objects or purposes which are charitable in accordance with the law of New Zealand, which related objects and purposes are declared to be the objects and purposes of the Trust.

TIMING

The Foundation receives and reviews research applications annually. Applications must be received by the Secretary no later than the last Friday of September (due date for 2020 is 25 September 2020). All applicants will be advised of the success or otherwise of their application.

In 2020 the Foundation is holding an additional, one-off, granting round in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications for this funding must be received by the Secretary no later than Friday 5 June 2020. See below for further information.

RESEARCH APPLICATIONS

Grants to successful applicants in recent years have been for amounts up to approximately $30,000. The trustees will accept and consider applications for smaller or larger amounts too. All applications are considered on their merit.

Due to some prior year grants not being taken up, in 2020 there is approximately $110,000 available from the general fund. There is also approximately $169,000 available from the suicide prevention fund, and $15,000 for the Haslam Fairbrother Scholarship.

SUICIDE PREVENTION FUNDING

Targeted funding is available for research related to the prevention of suicide. For further information please click here. The Oakley Mental Health Research Foundation welcomes applications that fit within this remit. Applicants should apply for this funding using the Suicide Prevention Research Application Form.

HASLAM FAIRBROTHER SCHOLARSHIP – SCHIZOPHRENIA RESEARCH

In conjunction with its general funding for mental health research, the Foundation is administering a $15,000 bequest which is available to assist with research into schizophrenia, and particularly for a study which aims to improve the lives of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Please use the general Application Form and indicate on your form that you would like your application to be considered for the Haslam Fairbrother Scholarship as well as for a grant from the general fund. Applications which are not successful for the Haslam Fairbrother Scholarship will still be considered for the general fund.

If a project is awarded the Haslam Fairbrother Scholarship funding, the Trustees will also consider provision of additional funding from the general fund for a project that they view as worthwhile and sound.

COVID-19 RESEARCH FUND – APPLICATIONS CLOSED

In response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation is holding a one-off urgent granting round to provide funding for research into the impact of Covid-19 control measures on the delivery of Mental Health Services. A total of $50,000 is available for this purpose.

For further information please click here. Applicants should apply for this funding using the general Application Form.

Please note that a requirement of this funding is that the research will be completed within 12 months, and the findings made available to interested parties within 18 months of the grant being approved.

Please note that as part of your application the Foundation requests that you also provide a good quality photo and a short statement about what receiving this grant would mean to you. This may be used for publicity purposes should your application be successful.
